Solid Saturday sees Van Gisbergen seventh in points

Lucas Oil’s Shane van Gisbergen has farewelled his race-winning Darrell Lea STIX Commodore with two top 10 finishes at the Winton SuperSprint, the fourth round of the V8 Supercars Championship.

Solid Saturday sees Van Gisbergen seventh in points

Van Gisbergen finished eighth and fifth in Saturday’s 60km dashes and was on track for another strong finish the following day, but a miscommunication in the pit stop saw him drop out of contention and finish 23rd.

TEKNO Autosports will debut a new VF Commodore for Van Gisbergen at next month’s SKYCITY Darwin SuperSprint, and Van Gisbergen said he left Winton with mixed emotions.

“I’d have loved to send off the car with one a last hurrah, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be,” Van Gisbergen said.

“Saturday brought two good results in tough conditions for the Holden teams, and we had good pace Sunday but we made a mistake and had to make an extra stop - and that hurt us.

“To win the championship you require consistent results and minimise mistakes, which we achieved on Saturday.”

Van Gisbergen will get behind the wheel of his new Darrell Lea STIX Commodore for the first time on Wednesday, 10 June for a 20-lap shakedown at Queensland Raceway.

“I’m looking forward to driving our new Holden and I can’t wait to see what it’s capable of in Darwin,” he said.

Van Gisbergen dropped a spot in the V8 standings and now sits seventh after four of 14 rounds, three points behind Garth Tander.

The SKYCITY Darwin SuperSprint takes place at Hidden Valley Raceway from 19-21 June.
