Are you looking forward to racing at Watkins Glen International?

"Road courses have never been my strong suit, but I am actually really looking forward to going to Watkins Glen International after our team's performance at Sonoma Raceway in June. Sonoma was fun. It made me realize that road course racing can be fun and it got me excited for Watkins Glen. I came to Watkins Glen with my brother and tested a Trans Am car a few weeks ago. It rained, but I was still able to learn some things. The race to the Chase is on, so my whole team is going into the race motivated to perform."

PAUL MENARD QUOTES:

Why has Watkins Glen International gotten so different over the years?

"It's really hard to pass. Obviously the harder it is to pass the more track position means, so you try to get all you can on the restarts. At a place like Watkins Glen there are better passing opportunities than somewhere like Sonoma. I think historically you see more wrecks and things like that at Sonoma whereas at Watkins Glen ,you can get by a guy if you're faster than him. It's a fun road course and it's totally opposite from Sonoma. It has really high speeds and the setup is a lot different than you would run at Sonoma, which all makes for an interesting weekend."

The days of road course "ringers" are pretty much gone now. Everyone seems to take it seriously now, why is that?

"I don't think anyone has not taken it seriously for the last 10 to 15 years. The points just add up and the more competitive the Sprint Cup Series gets, the more each weekend matters. There are a lot of guys that enjoy road racing, whereas a number of years ago guys maybe did not enjoy it. I think everyone, for the most part, looks forward to going to Watkins Glen and shifting gears."

Watkins Glen Rewind ... Newman qualified 14th and battled back from a pit road penalty to race from 32nd to a 14th-place finish.

RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES:

What makes Watkins Glen a challenge?

"Watkins Glen is so much faster than Sonoma Raceway. I think Pocono was a nice warm up to this race because of the fact that we had to shift. It couldn't have fallen at a better place on the schedule when it comes to preparing for this race. The speed is the biggest difference when comparing Watkins Glen to Sonoma. It also provides for a few more places to pass on the track, and that's always a good thing for us."

Since you've recorded a top-10 at Sonoma, does that mean you'll run well at The Glen?

"If you've run well at Sonoma, it means you are a good road-course driver. Odds are you will run well at Watkins Glen, but the tracks are quite a bit different so you have to take that in consideration and hope for the best."

Do you anticipate a lot of rolling of the dice by teams to try and steal a win at Watkins Glen?

"Watkins Glen is the same type of deal like Pocono, Indy and Michigan where the track is so long and the fuel mileage plays the biggest part of the teams' strategy. I think that can be as big of a question mark as any kind of a road course ace or anything like that."

With three laps to go on the final restart, Scott got shuffled into the seventh position where he would ultimately cross the finish line.

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTES:

What kind of road racer are you?

"I feel like I'm a good road racer. At Road America we ran upfront. I had my first experience racing on a road course in the rain. We were running second and unfortunately, the late race caution extended the race a little bit and it put us out of our fuel window and lost all our track position. But, our performance was really good both in the dry and in the rain at Road America, so I am excited to get back to a road course like Watkins Glen. I feel like we are capable of running up front and having a good performance."

Is Watkins Glen the speedway of Road Courses?

"I think it is. Everything is just a fast turn. It's all about keeping your speed up and not as technical as a place like Mid-Ohio for instance where we go next week. It's fun and it's always a big challenge. You get a lot of Cup guys who double dip and come and race in the Nationwide Series. The days of old where you used to really have to beat the road-course ringers are gone, all the stock car drivers are pretty good road racers now. It's hard to get an advantage. The competition level is going to be really high at Watkins Glen. I feel like it will be the fastest of the road courses we go to and yes, superspeedway like."

How difficult is the bus stop?

"It can get interesting. I don't think it's a difficult corner, but it always has a tendency of things happening there. If you're behind someone that gets in the grass, your grill gets covered in grass. Sometimes people get loose or sideways through there. It's always an exciting corner. There is always something going on there. But as far as difficulty, I don't think it's a challenging corner."

Dillon will be making his career debut at The Glen, but was able to test a Trans-Am Series Chevrolet Camaro on July 29.

He was able to drive his No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Chevrolet Camaro inside the top-10 for most of the 250 lap event. In the end, the 22-year-old driver got a good restart on lap 247 to finish fifth; the team's third consecutive top-five finish. Points update ... Dillon moves up to a tie for third place in the driver point standings, but is ranked fourth by virtue of top-five finishes. TY DILLON QUOTES:

How are your road course skills?

"I'm learning a lot, for sure. I've been getting a lot of good advice and have been able to get valuable track time at both Road America and Watkins Glen before the race weekend begins. The Trans-Am test I did last Monday with Austin (Dillon) helped with learning the corners, when to shift, and where you can pick up the most speed."

What's it been like the past few weeks at RCR?

"We're really hitting our stride. We were able to pick up another top-five this past weekend in Iowa following the win in Indianapolis. On top of that, my brother was able to get a win at Pocono Raceway in the Camping World Truck Series, which was a big win for that team and our partners at Yuengling in its home state. I think this shows how we didn't give up after a slow start to the season. ECR Engines continues to give us the best motors in the sport, and all the guys in the shop continue to put a lot of hours into making these racecars top-notch."

What are your thoughts heading in to this weekend at Watkins Glen International?

"Watkins Glen is fun road course for us. You can pass a lot easier here than at Sonoma, so it always makes for an interesting race. I look forward to what Nick (Harrison, Crew Chief) and the No. 33 Turtle Wax/Menards crew have for us this weekend."

Brendan Gaughan
No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet Camaro
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week's South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet at Watkins Glen ... Brendan Gaughan will pilot chassis No. 143 in the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. His most recent start was in 2013 with his current team, Richard Childress Racing, qualifying 16th and finishing 14th. Gaughan also has one NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start in 2004.

BRENDAN GAUGHAN QUOTES:

How do you think you and the RCR team will be returning to a road course?

"I believe all of the RCR teams are going to be very competitive. If you look at the entire package we all had at Road America, we were very strong. I am going to go into Watkins Glen and have a lot of confidence and feeling pretty sporty. Knowing that we were fastest in Road America with the dry conditions with the South Point Chevrolet helps us all have very positive attitudes heading into these next two weeks."

How is Watkins Glen International different than other road courses?

"Watkins Glen has so many fast corners. The bus stop, basically a corner built into chaos. You have to let the car roll as hard as humanly possible. It is a place on that course where you can't gain that much position, but you can lose a ton. Many other road courses are much more speedway fast, motor-wise, while the Glen is faster with corner speeds."
