Reigning Super Gas Australian Champion, Matt Forbes is confident his 12 month winning streak will continue at this weekend’s ninth round of the ANDRA Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship at Mildura’s Sunset Strip.
The event will be the final outing of Forbes’ championship winning Lucas Oil Products '27 Ford T Roadster.
Forbes remains undefeated in his quest for back to back titles and believes the farewell event in his winning car will see him extend his points lead with just two rounds remaining.
The Ballarat racer admits it will be an emotion filled weekend as he sends off his title conquering Roadster having recently unveiled its replacement, a '57 Corvette Roadster imported from the US.
“We’ve had a brilliant run in the Ford. There will definitely be some reflecting on what a great car it has been to be undefeated,” Forbes said.
“I’m certainly feeling nostalgic and I’m sad to see it go but we need to keep evolving.”
Having never competed at Mildura’s eighth mile track before, Forbes says it will be a tough ask but is confident he can claim maximum points.
“We have excellent data on eighth mile tracks so I feel we are well prepared,” Forbes said.
“Being the shorter track certainly presents its own challenges but the Ford has proven to be really strong at similar tracks.”
A solid result will strengthen Forbes’ chances of winning his second straight Super Gas title, by locking some of his rivals out of contention.
“This round is vitally important to the championship so we definitely won’t be taking this weekend lightly. I want to be heading into the final two events with the maximum possible points,” he said.
